Health Hack #49: Vitamin D & COVID – Why NOW is the time to do something!
Hopefully by now, you’ve seen the countless reports and studies linking COVID survival to bolstered Vitamin D levels. If you haven’t taken action already, now is your time to do something.
Even if COVID isn’t a concern (though I’m not sure how it cant be these days), decreased levels have other health impacts you likely aren’t aware of. And the cold, cloudy winter months aren’t helping as they further deplete our natural stores combined with less time outdoors soaking up the natural sun.
Vitamin D deficiencies are linked to high inflammatory markers, including D-dimer and ferritin.
Vitamin D plays a critical role in immune function and without it, makes you more susceptible to infections, disease and even cancer.
- Eat Vitamin D-rich foods like wild caught salmon and pasture-raised, non GMO eggs
- Consume Fish Oil /Cod Liver Oil or a fish oil supplement
- Take a high-quality vitamin D supplement. Most agree 5,000 IUI during the winter is minimum, some natural doctors suggest up to 10,000 IUI. You can work with your doctor or naturopath to determine your best dose. And consider testing your D serum levels to monitor along the way – a simple blood test that your doc can order. Here is my go-to brand: Vital Nutrients Vitamin D
Minimum 4,000 IU is recommended per day. Start with 10,000 IU per day for 2-3 weeks if you haven’t been taking D3 or if you are in the high risk SODA group: Seniors, Obese, African decent or dark skin, Diabetic.
