Health Hack #18: Purify Your Drinking Water
I can’t say enough about purifying your drinking water, especially since we’re consuming so much of it and need it daily to stay healthy. But what’s actually in our tap water??? Truth is it contains chlorine, fluoride, arsenic, lead, cadmium, pharmaceuticals, heavy metals, hexavalent chromium (most of which are cancer-causing)*. YIKES! But there is hope.
Here are a few helpful ideas to consider:
**Remember -- purifying your drinking water is a must, even if you have well water.
- Stop drinking bottled water! If we need a reason to save the planet and our health all at once, this is it. Cue up your glass or stainless reusable bottles because plastic is out. Dr. Axe just highlighted this topic on his blog and it’ll open your eyes for sure.
93% of bottled water samples tested were contaminated with tiny pieces of plastic (even the expensive brands!)
Bottled water is full of hormone-disrupting chemicals like anti-estrogens and anti-androgens. 11 out of 18 bottled water sampled induced estrogenic effects in a human cancer cell line.
And we’re bottled water junkies in the U.S. consuming 31 gallons of commercial bottled water a year. Honestly, we can personally attest to this old habit, as long-time Dasani drinkers. We’d buy cases each week in our house. Since making the switch, I have found some amazing glass and stainless bottle options, and we haven’t looked back. Same for our daughter.
- Get a countertop water distiller – it’s the cheapest option and easy-to-use. Here is a Google search if you want to start here to research the best one for you.
- Reverse Osmosis water system that mounts under your sink – Priciest option but by far worth the investment. We just installed one in December and it’s a noticeable change. The water actually tastes like ‘nothing’. No aftertaste, weird smells, just pure water. We even give it our dogs now!
- Berkey water filter - worth the $$ from what I've read, although I have no direct experience with this one. as it removes contaminants, requires no power or water pressure and super economical considering what it does! https://www.berkeyfilters.com/
p.s. you can also look up your local Tap Water contaminant score, thanks to EWG, an incredible organization. Enter in your zip code here - https://www.ewg.org/tapwater/
And here’s a little more from Dr. Axe on this topic:
- Laboratory testing conducted by Environmental Working Group found popular bottled water brands to contain mixtures of 38 different pollutants, including bacteria, fertilizer, Tylenol and industrial chemicals, some at levels no better than tap water. Some even contain high levels of cancer-causing chlorination byproducts. (9)
- In the United States, 24 percent of bottled water sold is either Pepsi’s Aquafina or Coke’s Dasani. Both brands are bottled, purified municipal tap water.
- Dr. Gina Solomon, a senior scientist at the Natural Resources Defense Council, an environmental advocacy group, told The New York Times that “there is no reason to believe that bottled water is safer than tap water.”
